Netanyahu’s statement came after Hamas published a 20-page document in which the organization demanded, among other things, « an immediate end to Israeli aggression in Gaza, murders, and ethnic cleansing committed against the entire population of Gaza. » Regarding the situation in the territory after the war, Hamas categorically rejected « any international or Israeli project aimed at deciding the future of the Gaza Strip. » The day before, the Israeli Prime Minister reaffirmed his opposition to any form of « Palestinian sovereignty. » This position tested Israel’s relations with its main ally and supporter, the United States, which advocates for a « two-state solution. »
For the first time, Hamas provided a detailed account of the October 7th terrorist attacks. In a 20-page document shared on Sunday, January 21st, the ruling organization in Gaza presented « its version of events. » While the attackers targeted kibbutzim near the Palestinian enclave and a music festival, Hamas claims to have « done its best to avoid harming civilians, » while acknowledging « mistakes. »
According to an AFP count based on official Israeli figures, these attacks resulted in the deaths of 1,140 people, mostly civilians. Approximately 250 people were taken hostage during this unprecedented attack in terms of its violence and scale, and, according to Israel, 132 people remain captive in Palestinian territory.
A drone strike attributed to Israel resulted in one death on Sunday in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese official news agency (ANI). « The strike, which targeted a car in Kafra, killed one person, and others suffered moderate and minor injuries, » reported the media outlet, citing « an Israeli drone. » Since the October 7th attacks, there have been daily exchanges of fire on the Israeli-Lebanese border between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, which supports its ally Hamas.
