Alexei Navalny, the prominent Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist, has died in prison at the age of 47. His death has shocked and saddened many around the world who saw him as a symbol of resistance against the autocratic rule of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Navalny first became involved in politics in 2011 and quickly gained popularity for his anti-corruption campaigns. He used his background in business law to purchase shares in state-owned companies, such as VTB Bank, Rosneft, and Gazprom, in order to expose their financial misconduct.

In 2010, Navalny launched a website called Rospil, which aimed to uncover cases of corruption within the Russian government. His investigative work earned him a reputation as a leading figure in the fight against corruption.

Navalny’s activism reached a peak in 2011 when he led mass protests against the election results that saw Putin’s party, United Russia, retain power. He believed that only through increased street mobilization could concessions be obtained from the Kremlin. The protests were the largest in Russia since Putin came to power in 2000.

Despite facing numerous legal challenges and allegations of political persecution, Navalny continued his activism. In 2013, he ran for mayor of Moscow but lost to Sergei Sobyanin, a close ally of Putin. Navalny alleged electoral fraud and the suppression of opposition voices.

Navalny’s efforts to expose corruption reached new heights in a 2017 YouTube investigation that implicated Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in a vast network of property acquisitions funded by oligarchs. The video went viral, and thousands of protesters took to the streets, some even carrying plastic ducks, symbolizing the luxury duck house allegedly owned by Medvedev.

In 2018, Navalny attempted to run for president against Putin but was barred from the election due to his conviction in a controversial embezzlement case. He claimed that the charges were politically motivated.

Navalny’s activism took a dangerous turn in August 2020 when he was poisoned with a nerve agent believed to be Novichok. He was airlifted to Germany for treatment, where his poisoning was confirmed. He accused Putin of ordering the attack, which the Russian government denied.

After recovering in Germany, Navalny made the bold decision to return to Russia despite the risks of arrest. He was promptly detained upon arrival and later sentenced to two and a half years in prison for violating the terms of his probation in the embezzlement case. His organization, the Anti-Corruption Foundation, was also declared « extremist » and banned.

Even from prison, Navalny continued to criticize the Russian government. He released a video in January 2021 that alleged Putin’s ownership of a billion-dollar palace on the Black Sea coast, fueling further public outrage.

Navalny’s imprisonment was marked by ongoing protests across Russia, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets in his support. The government responded with a crackdown, arresting and intimidating demonstrators.

On August 4, 2023, Navalny was sentenced to an additional 19 years in prison on trumped-up charges of extremism. In a message to his supporters, he urged them to resist Putin’s regime and vowed to continue his fight for democracy.

Navalny’s death in prison has raised international concern and renewed calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise. Many world leaders and human rights organizations have condemned Russia for its treatment of Navalny and its crackdown on dissent.

As the opposition to Putin mourns the loss of its leader, the future of Russia’s pro-democracy movement is uncertain. However, Navalny’s legacy as a symbol of resistance against corruption and authoritarianism is likely to endure.
